While sea kayaks were originally designed for use on the ocean, they are at home on any large body of water or in situations where you want move efficiently for a long distance. Sea kayaks are the nearest ancestor of the original kayaks created by the Inuit and Aleut peoples of the Arctic. These original kayaks were often quite narrow and fairly long. This help them move efficiently through the water even when the wind blows and the waves get large.

Kayaking Class Gear List and Dressing for Cold Water

Kayaking Class Gear List:

Paddlng safely in ocean water requires you pay attention to water temperature and conditions. You generally want to dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. You should also plan on carrying other gear that will help protect you or provide a layer of safety while paddling. The gear list provided here is tailored towards summer paddling in Maine. Local conditions where you paddle may dictate variations in this list.

Scouting the Shores of Schoodic

Gerry and I headed up to Maine last weekend to scout out the locations for the Schoodic Sea Kayak Retreat.

Launching the Skin on Frame microBootlegger Sport

I found a break in the ice on the river by my house to drop the kayak in for a quick trial. There was not enough open water for real sea trials, but I was able to determine that the boat floats upright and is comfortable to sit in and has no obvious bad behaviors. I'll be doing more indepth sea trials later.
